UNIT 7 LISTENING

LISTENING

The chapter 7 is about listening which is one of the receptive skill like reading. Listening is focused on responding to language rather than producing it. Spoken language has different text types, e.g. songs, stories, conversations, etc. These can contain incomplete utterances, hesitation, simple grammar, general vocabulary and diverse interaction patterns.
Learning to listen is to understand a range of relevant text although it is difficult because of the different speech, speed delivery and accent, which are part of the connected speech. There are different listening subskills, but it depends on the reason for it. It is useful to follow some techniques to understand and process the information or input. We might listen for gist, global understanding, specific information, drawing inferences and summarizing. Other ways are intensive and extensive listening
As teacher, it is important to give learners the opportunity to listen to many resources of spoken language providing authentic material. Hence, students can develop tasks such as True-False, completing tables, etc. in order to know if they have understood the different kinds of circumstances in the time that is available by the teacher, sometimes it is meaningful to make them to hear twice. Furthermore, the importance of listening in language learning and teaching, it is essential for language teachers to help their students become effective listeners. In the communicative approach to language teaching, this means modeling listening strategies and providing listening practice in authentic or real situations: those that learners are likely to encounter when they use the language outside the classroom.
