UNIT 2 LEXIS

WHAT IS LEXIS ?

This unit was about lexis that refers to the individual words or units of vocabulary which have a specific meaning. I can mention that there are important features and key concepts which are meaningful to revise. Thus, I learnt that at the moment to speak, we can find kinds of meaning based on the context, since words can be used in different varieties of English (American, British pronunciation). Likewise, I have to emphasize that idioms, chunks, collocations and compound nouns arise from words that often occur together. For example: do homework, let´s go. Also, it is essential to distinguish between homophones and homonyms. Homophones describe the words with the same pronunciation but with a different meaning. For example: Know- no, although homonyms are words with same spelling and pronunciation bur with a different meaning, such as book as a verb and book as a noun. Equally, we have to be careful with false friends, because there are words that look and sound familiar in a language but its meaning is not the same, for example: assist ≠ asistir.

Basically, lexis plays a main role in the communicative field and it facilitates to use proper vocabulary according to the setting in real situations, so students need to be familiar with the lexical features as well as to develop and improve this skill. A teacher, we have to realize that learners do not acquire meanings of words in isolation, so we have to apply it through certain activities using a proper methodology.
