WHAT
IS FUNCTION?
In
this chapter 4, I learnt that function
is a reason why we communicate for a specific purpose. In other words, it is a
way of describing how we use language
and its meaning. I could emphasize that the language we use to express is
called exponent. These exponents
provide different levels of formality
into the language, but it depends on the context or situation in which it is
used is often stated to as register.
There is formal language when it
is used in important situations, e.g. Could you please help me?, whereas informal language
occurs among people who know each other well, and within it coloquial are used (conversational).
The
functional use of language is not only based on certain language structure or
grammatical rules, it is how we understand the context and use the language in
order to fulfill those purposes. Hence, I consider that students need
to learn functions together with grammatical structure to produce the language
effectively. Therefore, teachers should be careful about the usage of verbs
tenses, phrases, structures and vocabulary because these are the main factors
that we can make our students to write or speak English correctly. Functions
and their appropriacy, formality
and degree need to be considered at the moment to communicate.
I think, you have done a very good job with this reflection, I think that you have included the most relevant aspects based on the topic.
